GEOL 296: Field Based Geology of the San Juans

Summer, 2008
Course Description
Field based geology of the San Juans is an introductory geology class designed to introduce students to both the principles of physical geology, the study of the materials that comprise the Earth, and historical geology which uses geologic observations to interpret the history of a particular region.
Almost every rock type and geologic relationship can be found within the western San Juan Mountains and the course takes full advantage of this “natural classroom” through six half-day field trips. Through these field trips students will learn to identify rocks and minerals, make geologic observations, use observations to interpret rock forming processes and how particular rock units fit into the regional plate-tectonics framework of the southwestern U.S. The course will also delve into more general interest topics such as the origin of ore deposits, earthquake processes, mudslides, glaciers and why all those rocks down valley are red. The course is suitable for those with little scientific background but will also be of interest to more advanced students. Course materials consist of an introductory physical geology text, local geologic map and selected readings dealing specifically with the geologic history of the San Juans.
Students enrolled for college credit will be required to complete weekly homework assignments as well as a final project or paper.
